Futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard also uses the birthing metaphor to describe this moment in our conscious evolution. We are in the midst of a great shift in bringing about the planetary birth. The crises we are facing are essential to the process, just as birth pangs are to being born. Crises are evolutionary drivers of the rebirth process, accelerating the spiritual development of humanity.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu says, “The atomized homogeneous groups that existed in the past are no longer the truth of our world. We must recognize that we are part of one group, one family – the human family. Our survival as a planet depends on it. We are part of one family, and we are fundamentally good.”
The transformation process described here, essentially a symbolic death of the old way of seeing the world followed by the birth of a new worldview, has long been underway. James Redfield and Michael Murphy have outlined the continuity in the great turning-points of the evolution of consciousness, beginning with our ancestors who awoke to the Transcendent through shamanism and the ancient mystery schools, to the founding and flourishing of each of the world’s great religious traditions (East and West from Hinduism to Islam), followed by the Renaissance and finally the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution taking us into the 18th century.
